Welcome to my Journal.

As I no longer really post my fiction here, I'm opening the journal. Select entries will still be friends locked, but for the most part it's open game as of now.

If you're looking for my graphics, check out [info]starsgraphics.

If you're looking for my screencap community, check out [info]stars_caps.

All of my fiction will for now be posted at my insanejournal. I have yet to post all of my fic there, particularly all my older stuff. My IJ is public.

So, I totally signed up for this, because... How could I not?

It'll be Kirk/McCoy.

I have no idea at all what my storyline will be, but I've got a few days to figure that one out. *grins*

DC, ST Fic Update Post

Hey everyone!

I probably should have checked in here after my trip, but it's been a rough week. I've been extremely tired and catching up on sleep, and it's so damned hot here. So I just didn't do it.

But here I am. Had a great time in DC. Didn't do much sight seeing there, except for on Saturday, which I did with the (almost) entire group.

Cut for length, wherein a blather on about my trip, and fic I'm writing )

For those who haven't heard, [info]minotaurs passed away yesterday morning. He was well known in the slash part of fandoms for his site where he posted sex tips for slash writers.

I had the privilege of meeting him a couple of years ago. He was a sweet, funny man, and I had a lot of fun watching him explain to a bunch of women how gay sex worked. I am very sad for his family and friends, and my heart goes out to all of you who knew and loved him. I am sorry that I will not get to meet him again, and he will be greatly missed.

Couple of things that are not cool...

ATU Tony
1. Making someone a maintainer of a community without asking them, and then NOT telling them they are now the maintainers, and then taking yourself off as one yourself, leaving the other two new, clueless maintainers standing around going WTF? NOT COOL!

2. Going on a major fandom community, telling people how sick they are of the main pairing in the fandom, and getting on people for actually liking the two main characters/actors who play them, while lamenting that there isn't enough het and other pairings, and there are other characters and actors, when there are actually communities out there for them and there is clearly more than you realized because you were, IMO, too lazy to actually look. NOT COOL!

Seriously, if you're going to have a sense of entitlement, actually make sure that that entitlement might have a little bit of justification? One of the other big pairings in said fandom is a het pairing, and there is quite a bit being written in it. There are several other slash pairings, and there is a third main character who gets a fair amount of screen time and gets his props in fandom.

There are far more constructive ways of getting what you want other than insulting fans of the main pairing and trying to suck the fun out of it (even if that wasn't your intention).

No love,

your disgruntled, confused newly-crowned-against-her-will maintainer and irritated multi-character shipper in said fandom who actually enjoys the main pairing

Misha Collins is absolutely hilarious. If you don't follow his twitter but want to, I'd suggest reading from the beginning. He's so much fun.

Now if only he could get Jensen and Jared to Tweet. I can only imagine what those three together could get up to. (Just FYI, the J2s did say that they are NOT on twitter, so any account on there is a fake. This is according to the Asylum page on the Supernatural Wiki.)

Still working on my list of stuff to do. Got more crossed off. (List behind the cut). Some things I'm in the middle of, so hopefully by tomorrow I can cross off a few more. :) I'm almost done with all the links I'm going to add this time around, since I need to finish up my articles, and some other things, and I don't have the hours needed to add all the fandom and resource links I actually have, and still get the other things done.

Some of this stuff, it'll take me two minutes to do, like print out the things I need to print out, and to change the background color on the pages. So I'll be doing those tonight, hopefully. I was going to do them last night, but I ended up doing something for my sister, and didn't have that little bit of extra time.

Kirk
I have a very long to do list for stuff to finish before the 23rd of June. Thought I'd shove it up here, and maybe looking at it will get my ass into gear for some of it. *cringes* I know there will be more to add as I go along, but this is a start, lol.

this.

I have no words....

  • May. 15th, 2009 at 8:45 AM
brian-you gotta be kidding me
Quote from Patricia Wrede in 2006, about a book in which she obliterates the entire Native American population to make an AU history.... The book is her new The Thirteenth Child.

I'm currently assuming there will be African slaves, possibly even more
(since there won't be any Native Americans to have already done a certain
amount of prepping land for human occupation
, nor to be exploited later).

For. Human. Occupation...

So, apparently, I'm not human. Or, not completely at least. I mean, there was some interspecies breeding going on a few generations ago in my bloodline (Cherokee warrior married white woman in an effort to stay on land and not go on the Trail of Tears). For the full WTF-ness of the situation, you can see it here.

I just... I have no words for the fury I feel. Needless to say, I will NEVER buy one of this author's books...EVER... Because, you know, you just can't apologize for telling someone they're NOT HUMAN. Not that, you know, she has or anything.

Oh, and this was just...special...

According to Lois Bujold:

The other and more hopeful point is that never before have so many Readers of Color existed to *have* the conversation, or been able to communicate with each other to do so.

and

This is the first occasion I know of that a book out of the former tradition has intersected the new audience.

Apparenty, because cons and other SF/F events are NOT chocked full of FoC, then fans who are POC don't exist. Didn't you know, no non-whites ever watched or read SF/F/H prior to the invention of the Internetz. *facepalms*

Though do click the link and read the comments. They're classic, and I agree with them. I totally wasn't watching Star Trek at age five. I never watched Twilight Zone, wasn't an avid watcher of TNG, or of a myriad of other SF/F shows. Those forty-something readings of Tolkien were just figments of my imagination. I've never been into horror either (toes horror movie/book collection under sofa).

Yeah, sweetie, your comments aren't due to AGE. They're due to ignorance and the inability to get on the freakin' cluebus.

If you want to get the full scoop of Race/Mammoth Fail, go here. Pretty much the link archive for this pathetic mess.

Interesting...

ATTN: POC on my F-List

If you're a POC/non-white, and a fan of the SF/F genres, go here and add your name to the list. POC are often invisible in the SF/F world, so check in and make yourself noticed. There are already 19 pages of comments. And please, spread this around. Who knows. Maybe it will make current and future writers of Sci-Fi and Fantasy think.

You don't have to be a member of that comm to post a comment.

I already signed. :D

Yeah, I got nothing done this weekend. I caught some kind of stomach bug that's been bothering me since Thursday, and I ended up sleeping most of the weekend. So my long to do list...got nothing crossed off.

Which means I'll have to kick my ass in gear when I get home every day this week.

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me (word prompts are good too). In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. (You don't have to, but it would be kinda cool if you did. Just sayin'.)

You know me and word counts. Don't be surprised if they're ficlets. You guys know my fandoms.

Geocities closing this year...

  • Apr. 26th, 2009 at 2:31 PM
lucas-trust me
Apparently, Yahoo's Geocities will be closing this year".

It'll be sometime later this year, but I thought people might want the heads up, since I know some ficcers still use it. Yahoo will only provide paid webhosting (link can be found at the above page). Apparently they haven't yet mentioned this little detail to those who use their hosting.

So if you host your fiction sites on there, you might want to find someplace else, or at least make sure all of your files are saved. If you read any fan fiction on there, you might want to save it, in case the author no longer participates and won't be putting it up anywhere else. Or, if there are resources you may use that are located there, save them.

If you know someone who uses geocities, you might want to give them notice that they'll need new archiving/web hosting. Believe me, I know how long it takes to recode and remake web sites.

Finished one of my Sylum fics! \o/
After it's approved and I make any necessary edits, I'll send it off to be beta read.

In other writing news, I made a post (after a very long hiatus in which I was lazy and/or had no Internet) to my writing journal, [info]starkindler76. It's an ATU AU fic, Torchwood storyline. Quite a long entry too.

Now to get started on the five billion and one other things I need to get done before I get on that plane in June. *rushes off*

Taking Drabble/Ficlet Prompts

Got a whole week off, and I figured...why not? This will give me something to work on when the big stories and other stuff I'm working on don't want to cooperate. (The fact that it will help bulk up my yearly word count is entirely beside the point. :D )

So for today, I will be taking requests. Leave me:

Fandom:
Pairing/Character:
Prompt: (one or two words)

If you leave one after I leave for today, I will still get it through my email on my phone. I just likely will not respond. You guys tend to know my fandoms. :)

Two More Days...

  • Mar. 12th, 2009 at 3:13 PM
lucas-trust me
Until my sister's wedding. One more day until I'm internetless for nine days. I can get online at the library if I absolutely need to, but I plan on using the time to write and make screencaps. And of course do some spring cleaning. Yuck.

Got a little beta reading to do as well, and some editing on my own fics. My list of stories to start/complete by the beginning of May is looong, but I hope to make a massive dent in it this week.

My brother is moving to California at the beginning of the month, so I'm busy ripping all the DVDs he's going to take with him. Including the first three seasons of Smallville! *wibbles and wails* (I'm actually nearly done with the second season, so I only have one more to go). I'm going to be capping stuff that he's taking this week, in addition to Return of the King (which someone had asked for), so I can have the big caps instead of the smaller ones that tend to look crappy when I increase the size in vlc.

Anyway, I probably won't post tomorrow, so I just wanted to say bye! See you a week from Monday!

*waves to flist*

twisted, depraved, rotton...I like it
I got a new laptop! I have access to the internet now, during the weekdays! Yay! It's all shiny and pretty, and doesn't flake out on me because it overheats, and doesn't move at a snail's pace.

Still trying to recover from a cold that I had over a week ago. The cold itself wasn't that awful, but the lingering cough is going to give me fits. It was so annoying last night, I had to use my inhaler just to get my lungs to open up and give me some relief.

My sister's wedding is a week from tomorrow. I'll be glad when it's over, because the last minute wedding stuff is so tiring. Not as bad as my other sister's wedding, but still...

I can't wait until the wedding is over, because the week after that is spring break, and I will have a whole week with nothing to do but (clean) and write! Yay! Can't wait. Got a looong list of fic to work on during that week.

In other news, someone on my flist caused my head to implode with a story idea a while ago... I have still not recovered from it. You know who you are. *sticks tongue out*

Yep, still here, and I want to thank everyone who sent me birthday wishes. I have had a very busy week, and was only able to get online at the library today. My sister's bridal shower was on Saturday, and I was dead to the world on Sunday...

Now I've got a cold. Brilliant, huh? *sniffles*

Should be back on Saturday, to work on catching up with some of my flist. *hugs to all*

Yeah, I'm around. But my Internet access has been sketchy at best, so I haven't said much. Bad me.

Not much going on. Just babysitting my niece and writing. Doing some reading.

We got our house broke into the other day. Forgot to lock the door and some kid braved five yapping dogs to come in, take our old dvd player, a converter box, and seven dvds...oh, and some quarters. *rolls eyes* I was slightly annoyed when I realized he took movies with Jared, Tom Welling, Sean Bean, and Vin Diesel in them, but I didn't pay over ten dollars for any of them, and I can get them back without a problem. Stupid kids.

That's about it. Just wanted to let everyone know I hadn't disappeared into the wide blue yonder. *waves*

Happy New Year!

  • Jan. 1st, 2009 at 12:55 PM
hell in a handbasket
Happy New Year to everyone on my flist! Another year gone by, and another one's going to fly by before we know it.

I only have one New Year's Resolution that I'm determined to stick with, and that's writing 500k words worth of fandom stuff this year. I was doing that in 2008, but didn't make it for a variety of reasons. Between everything (fics, essays, wiki entries) that counted toward my fandom-related word count, I probably got close to 300,000, but I lost my word count that I did have when my computer crashed, I got lazy with keeping track of my word count, and I forgot what counted and what didn't when I went to redo my word count. I also lost big pieces of incompleted essays that I'd forgotten to back up, etc. Oh, well.

But this year, I fully plan on making my word count. I've got three or four fics lined up for the Big Bang for Primeval that runs all year, I've got about thirty Sylum stories that need to be finished. I've got several ficlets that I didn't get done for Christmas to do and post, the raffle fics I need to write for the raffle from last year's gathering, and a few other fics I have to write for people. That doesn't count my fan fiction that doesn't fit into those categories. Anyway, there should be no reason I don't make it this year.

And I will have a better way of managing my word count, and I will keep it not only in a notebook, but on my PC, my laptop, my memory stick, and back it up weekly on disk. *glares at stupid computers that crash without warning*

That's my one and only resolution. *looks determined*

Thank you....

Hope everyone who is celebrating their particular holidays at this time of year has happy ones. *hugs*

Holiday ficlets and other such stuff will be written and sent after Christmas, since the unexpected death threw me off kilter, but those of you who gave me requests (you know who you are) will get them, I promise.

*hugs to everyone*

It's that time of year again! Going to be working on getting holiday cards sent out this year, so if you want one, leave a comment here with your name and address where it can be sent. Comments are screened.

Or, if you don't want to leave it here, you can email me at starkindler76@gmail.com

If you are on the Sylum list and are doing the CCL this year, disregard this. I'll already be sending you one. :D

Also, let me know if you don't want something Christmassy (I don't really do the whole religious thing, but you might be bopped over the head with Santa and his merry reindeer, or a Christmas tree or something). And if you want, a few fandoms/pairings you like, so if I have a chance I might include something there. :)
